Mark The Date: The Youth Expo Experience Returns April 13-15

The Youth Expo Experience - April 13-15, 2012For the 32nd year, the OC Fair & Event Center will once again host The Youth Expo Experience from April 13-15, 2012 in salute to the many talents of local students.

Themed “Ewe Rock!” the free three-day event is fun for the whole family with its mix of competitive exhibits, contests, entertainment, activities and food.

Here are some of the exciting and family-friendly activities to find at Youth Expo this year:

STEM & DMA Showcase: New this year, the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Digital Media Arts (STEM & DMA) Showcase includes scholastic and professional industry displays and exhibits, in addition to a robotics competition, alternative fuel exhibit, guest speakers and competitive displays submitted by local students.

Building Industry Education Council (BIEC) 23rd Annual Design/Build Competition: A live competition on Saturday and Sunday that pits student teams against each other to see who are this year’s best young designers and builders.

School Projects: Local students show off their talents in drawing, creative writing, woodworking, science, social studies, computer graphics, photography and LEGO™ masterpieces.

Orange County Science & Engineering Fair: This annual competition encourages students to explore physical and life sciences. Many of the top competitors will move on to compete in the California State Science Fair, Broadcom MASTERS competition and the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair.

4-H Competitions: Local youth and teens are judged on their abilities to raise livestock, their understanding of animal and veterinary sciences, and their display projects on community service, aerospace, entomology, electricity and more.

Girl Scouts’ GIRLtopia: This art showcase just for Girl Scout Seniors presents an opportunity to share their vision of the contest theme of “Toward an Ideal World for Girls” Create It!

Lil’ Sprouts Jr. Farm & Garden Contest: Little thumbs compete to see who can grow the best fruits, vegetables and flowers. Youth are invited to submit their entries on Friday, April 13 from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Centennial Farm.

Gourmet Food Trucks & Local Fundraising Food Booths: Youth Expo visitors won’t go hungry with gourmet food truck fare on Saturday and Sunday or grub from the food booths organized and supported by local youth groups any day.

Plus: Centennial Farm gardens and animal pens, milking demonstrations, oxen team demonstrations, hands-on arts and crafts, hay rides, Bug Barn, “Thank a Farmer Magic Show,” Gale Webb’s Extreme Sports & Air Show, Wild Science hands-on exhibits, blacksmith and leather-making demonstrations, a worm farm, petting zoo, butter-making demonstrations, a play zone for small children and free family entertainment all day.

Youth Expo is open Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free all three days and many activities are free of charge. Parking is $5 on Saturday and Sunday and Friday is Field Trip Day, when schools are encouraged to attend as a group. For more information about Youth Expo, visit ocfair.com/youthexpo.

First Concerts and Action Sports Announced for 2012 OC Fair July 13-August 12

The OC Fair has begun announcing the concert and action sports lineups for this summer in the Pacific Amphitheatre, The Hangar and the Action Sports Arena.

Concert and action sports tickets always include free OC Fair admission so plan a full day at the OC Fair for before and after the show. Select shows are currently available for purchase online at Ticketmaster.com or from the onsite Box Office during regular hours. The remaining concerts and action sports will be announced in the coming months. Sign-up for email alerts at ocfair.com to receive notifications when new shows are announced and go on sale.

Also on sale are single-day general admission and the 23-day Super Pass. These are also available online or directly from the onsite Box Office.

With the theme “Home Sweet Home,” the 2012 OC Fair will roll out the doormat to welcome Southern California back to its summer home for its 23-day run July 13-August 12. Fairgoers are invited to enjoy all the comforts of “home” with their favorite Fair foods, carnival rides, competitive entries, livestock exhibits, headline music performances and more.

The 2011 OC Fair welcomed a record-setting 1,400,280 Fairgoers and earned a No. 1 ranking by Los Angeles Times readers and a No. 7 spot in attendance for fairs and large festivals in North America (as reported by industry news provider CarnivalWarehouse.com).

OC Fair Opens the Competitive Season for Bakers, Quilters, Photographers and More

2012 OC Fair - July 13- August 12 - "Home Sweet Home"The OC Fair is looking for the best cake decorators, pie makers, photographers, woodworkers, painters, jewelry makers, gardeners and more in hundreds of competitions.

Each competition has a variety of regulations and rules so all interested entrants should read all applicable guides and materials before submitting their pieces. The full list of competitions and the 2012 OC Fair Competition Guides are available online at ocfair.com/competitions (under “How to Submit”.)

Most competitions have a June 1 deadline for the required online entry registration. For those that need help registering their entries, the OC Fair Community Relations staff is offering Help Days to assist with completing the online form. Help Days are free and will be held in the Administration Building inside Gate 4 off Arlington Drive from 1-6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1. Many competitions have a processing fee so interested entrants should remember to bring a major credit card to complete their online entry registration.

12 Fight Club OC
An innovative bi-monthly series featuring boxing and mixed martial arts competitive fights with ringside luxury suites, VIP access for season ticket holders and sponsors, and a happy hour bar and grill for all attendees.

14 Fight Club OC – MMA Saturdays
Opening night of Fight Club OC's new Saturday event featuring a full night of mixed martial arts action. Season tickets and VIP suites are available for purchase. Come early for Happy Hour specials in the onsite Baja Blues restaurant starting at 5:30 p.m.

13-15 The Youth Expo Experience

Fairing Well - A blog by the OC Fair & Event CenterThe OC Fair & Event Center (OCFEC) is further expanding its commitment to engage with all its audiences by offering readers of its new blog, Fairing Well, the luxury of posting comments on the various posts. Anyone with a valid and free Facebook account can offer their own voices to Fairing Well.

OCFEC welcomes an engaging and productive dialogue with the community to continue fulfilling its Mission Statement of, “A Celebration of Orange County's Communities, Interests, Agriculture and Heritage.” The staff and members of the Board will periodically post timely messages related to OCFEC, its events and goals that are open to public comment.

OCFEC Proceeds on Master Plan with Main Mall Capital Improvements

Crews have been diligently working on the capital improvements in the Main Mall, the heart of the OC Fair & Event Center property. A newly designed walkway and various canopies are in the works.
